DIL TO PAGAL HAI {1997}

Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is a dancer and the director of a successful music and dance troupe. He believes that Nisha (Karisma Kapoor), one of his dancers, is his best friend; Nisha acts like his pal, but is secretly in love with him. Nisha injures her foot and Rahul needs a new dancer. He hires Pooja (Madhuri Dixit). She and Rahul are increasingly attracted to each other, but they act as if it were not happening. Pooja, unknown to Rahul, is already engaged to Ajay (Akshay Kumar), the son of family friends who raised her when her parents were killed. A romance with another man would be scandalous, and be a disappointment to her auntie and uncle, who want to see her marry their son. She tries to keep her distance from Rahul and Rahul, puzzled by her mixed signals, does not push matters. Nisha, however, her senses sharpened by jealousy, sees it all. Rather than try to stop the affair, however, she decides to leave India for a time and let matters take their course. She truly loves Rahul, and wishes only the best for him. As preparations for the new show continue, Pooja finally tells Rahul that she is engaged to Ajay; Rahul is deeply hurt. He revises the show to reflect his new unhappiness. Nisha returns from London to view the new production and complains that it has an unhappy ending. Rahul refuses to change it; the story reflects his relationship to Pooja the way he sees it. In the end, Rahul decides to make one last effort to revive his romance with Pooja. Pooja is torn between love and duty until Ajay, who has realized what is going on, releases Pooja from her engagement. Pooja and Rahul reconcile and all ends happily.

Plot Synopsis...

The film begins with a discussion between two young people, Rahul and Pooja, on the nature of love. Pooja believes in love and that God has predestined our soulmates for us, but Rahul is sceptical about love and laughs it off. They go their separate ways, but a song follows about the intertwining of love and destiny ("Ek Duje Ke Vaaste").


A Bombay theatre troupe is giving a gala performance, with their lead actress, Nisha, performing a big number ("Le Gayi"). The troupe's leader, Rahul, announces a new play, "Maya", will make its premier in three months. However, Rahul, with typical youthful impulsiveness, has not even prepared a script for the play. All he has is the concept of a girl named Maya: romantic who is the girl of every man's dreams... Meanwhile, in another part of Bombay, a girl named Pooja starts her day. Pooja, an orphan since her parents were killed in a car accident, has been raised from childhood by a couple who were family friends. From time to time she receives a tape from the son of that couple, Ajay, a childhood friend who is now a businessman working abroad.


Rahul prepares a script for Maya, but Nisha rejects it on the grounds that there is no depth to Maya and she is a meaningless character. Rahul then explains the concept and character of Maya through a song ("Bholi Le Surat"). They later attend a party where they discuss the nature of love; Rahul, as before, does not believe in love and its predestination, but Nisha is a staunch supporter of love, quietly stating to herself when Rahul leaves to sing a party song ("Pyar Kar") that behind their banter of friendship, she has fallen in love with him. Rahul and Pooja have a series of near-miss encounters.


Ajay returns from abroad to visit his parents and Pooja. He claims that he's found the love of his life, the girl he wants to spend the rest of his life with, but won't tell Pooja who she is. In the meantime, it's Nisha's birthday, and the troupe takes her out for a party. Getting drunk in the process, she has to be carried home and confesses to Rahul that she loves him, unsettling him. On the last day of Ajay's visit, he spends a day with Pooja at a theme park ("Dil To Pagal Hai"). At the airport, he confesses to Pooja that she is the girl of his dreams, and asks her to marry him. She is speechless with shock, but he takes it to mean she accepts his proposal, and leaves joyfully.


One day, while training, Nisha seriously injures her foot. In hospital, the doctor states she cannot dance until her leg is healed, in a matter of weeks. With time running out on him, Rahul spots Pooja and tests her out, having her dance to a series of drumbeats. Impressed by her talent at dancing, he hires her as a replacement dancer. She quickly becomes a member of the troupe, adapting to their habits and culture, and even paying Nisha an incognito visit to the hospital ("Koi Ladki Hai"). She impresses Rahul with her beauty, her talent and her belief in the power of love.


Nisha is discharged early from the hospital, so she pays a visit to the theatre and sees Pooja dancing on a stage for the first time. Jealous at her skill in dancing, she takes the stage and the two engage in a dance competition of sorts ("The Dance of Envy"). Unfortunately, Nisha's leg gives out once more and she decides to leave for London and let matters take their course. Pooja and Rahul begin to find themselves increasingly attracted to each other ("Are Re Are"), even though Pooja, in the light of her engagement, tries to keep her distance from him.


Pooja (with Rahul voluntarily tagging along) pays her old dance teacher a visit and confides everything in her. The teacher encourages her to follow her heart and not to fall in with the duty bound to her by her guardians; she also gives similar advice to Rahul. At a wedding of two of the troupe members, they both finally give in to their attraction towards each other ("Dholna"), but later Pooja runs away from him ("Are Re Are"). Nisha returns and sees that Rahul and Pooja have cemented their love, leaving her heartbroken.


Ajay phones his mother and informs her he is coming home immediately to marry Pooja; the reason for his haste is that he's got a job that will keep him from home for two years. At about the same time the call arrives, Pooja records a tape for Ajay stating that she has fallen in love with Rahul. But later, she learns about Ajay's return, and decides to marry him. She later introduces Ajay to Rahul and hurts him greatly, much to the secret delight of Nisha...


Rahuls play "Maya" is ready, but the script has been revised by Rahul to reflect his unhappiness over his love life. Both he and Pooja keep to themselves, their silence giving great sorrow to Nisha. She complains to Rahul about the sadness of the play and encourages Pooja to speak out to Rahul, but is unsuccessful. At the premier of "Maya", Rahul decides to make one last effort to revive his romance with Pooja. Pooja is torn between love and duty until Ajay, who has discovered Poojas tape and realized what is going on, releases Pooja from her engagement. Pooja and Rahul can now be together, and "Maya" ends happily.


The film closes on a hopeful note, as Ajay and Nisha meet each other for the first time...

Kisah ini diawali ketika Rahul yang diperankan oleh Bollywood megastar Shahrukh Khan sedang mencari seorang penari untuk memerankan sebuah karakter yang bernama Maya. Padahal Rahul mempunyai sahabat yang juga adalah penari, yakni Nisha (Karishma Kapoor), namun ternyata Rahul menganggap Nisha tidak cocok untuk peran Maya. Nisha sendiri mempunyai kepercayaan bahwa cinta adalah persahabatan dan pada suatu hari impiannya yakni Rahul mencintainya akan menjadi kenyataan.

Pada suatu hari, Rahul mendapatkan seseorang yang dianggap cocok untuk peran Maya untuk drama panggungnya. Ia adalah Pooja (Madhuri Dixit), seorang gadis cantik yang juga mahir menari seperti halnya Nisha. Tidak hanya itu, Pooja juga mempunyai sebuah impian, yakni bahwa ada seorang pria akan datang membawa cinta untuknya dan mereka akan hidup bahagia untuk selamanya. Nah, terjadilah sebuah kisah cinta yang melibatkan Rahul, Nisha dan Pooja.

Madhuri Dixit
Pada awalnya aktris ini hanya ingin menjadi seorang ahli mikrobiologi, namun jalan hidupnya ternyata melenceng. Madhuri yang lahir pada 15 Mei 1967 di Mumbai, India ini kemudian masuk ke dalam jajaran model. Ternyata karier modelingnya melejit sehingga iapun menjadi salah satu supermodel India. Ia lalu ditawari sebuah peran dalam film "Abodh" (1986) oleh Rajishi Production, namun jeblok di pasaran. Untunglah seorang produser dan sutradara terkenal, Subhash Gai melihatnya sehingga menawari peran kecil dalam film "Karma" (1986). Sayangnya peran tersebut dipotong oleh editor.

Setelah membintang beberapa film, akhirnya filmnya yang berjudul "Tezaab" (1988) berhasil melejitkan Madhuri menjadi salah satu aktris papan atas Bollywood. Bahkan film "Dil" (1990) hasil arahan sutradrara Indra Kumar berhasil memberikan penghargaan pertama baginya yakni "Filmfare Award". Kolaborasi antara Madhuri dengan Indra Kumar berlanjut dengan film "Beta" (1991) dan "Raja" (1995). Kedua film tersebut berhasil menjadi film yang mencatat box office di India. Sejak 1990an, film-film yang dibintanginya seperti "Sajaan" (1991), "Prem Pratigaya" (1991),"Khalnayak" (1993) dan "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (1994).

Sayangnya setelah kesuksesan film "Raja", film-film Madhuri mulai jeblok di pasaran seperti "Yaarana" (1995), "Prem Granth" (1996) dan seterusnya. Untunglah film "Mrityudand" (1997) yang dibintanginya lumayan sukses sehingga membuktikan bahwa ia belum habis. Yash Chopra, produser legendaris menawari Madhuri untuk membintangi film "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997). Ternyata film tersebut menjadi fenomena box office di Bollywood.

Bukan hanya itu dari dua film disebut di atas, Madhuri berhasil menyabet beberapa penghargaan. Madhuri juga membintangi film yang sukses lainnya seperti "Pukar" (2000) dan "Lajja" (2001). Selain itu, filmnya yang berjudul "Devdas" yang juga dibintangi aktor terkenal Shahrukh Khan dan "Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam" beredar di tahun 2002 ini. Khusus film "Devdas" ini menurut kabar terakhir, ternyata berhasil mencatatkan rekor pendapatan dari peredarannya di India dan beberapa negara.
