JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM {2007}

Of Pakistani origin, Alvira Khan lives a care-free lifestyle in Britain. One day while waiting for a train at Waterloo Station, she shares her table with an East Indian male, Rakesh Thakral. Both have a light discussion with Alvira confiding that she is in love with another East Indian male, Satvinder Singh, a lawyer by profession who rescued her and then represented her successfully against Madame Tussauds, both fell in love and are soon to be married. Rakesh confides that he is in love with Anaida Raza, a Muslim of Indian origin. They subsequently go on their respective ways but are fated to meet again, and this time Alvira introduces Rakesh to Satvinder, and she, in turn, is introduced to Anaida. Complications arise when Satvinder falls in love with Anaida, who is not who she claims to be, and circumstances will reveal that Rakesh and Alvira have been less than forthright with each other.  

Plot Summary:

The film begins with a mysterious gypsy-like musician leading the crowds at Waterloo station in London in a dance to the title song. At the station, two strangers, Rikki Thukral and Alvira Khan, wait for their respective fiancés. Rikki is a fun-loving Punjabi boy from Bhatinda who lives in Southall, while Alvira is a middle class Pakistani girl from Lahore who is more assimilated into British culture. The two share a table in a café together and to kill the time they talk about how they met their partners-to-be. Rikki, handsome but primitive in the Desi way, says that he met his fiancé, Anaida Raza, at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, the same night that Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al-Fayed left the hotel to take their last journey together. Rikki explains "When two lovers die, another two are born", as he fell in love with Anaida that night. Alvira says she met her fiancé, the dashing lawyer Steve Singh at Madame Tussauds in London when he saved her from death by a falling Superman wax model. The encounter changed her life and she was smitten by the lawyer who also helped her sue Madame Tussauds for substantial damages. As Rikki and Alvira talk they begin to enjoy each other's company and their different backgrounds cease to matter. They exchange numbers and go to meet their partners. However, it is then revealed that they had not gone to meet their respective partners. Rikki is in fact at the train station to meet his business partner, while Alvira is meeting her relatives. As they leave the station separately, they realize they are in love, but believe their love is unrequited, each of the other. The two get in touch when Alvira calls Rikki, pretending it was a wrong number. They decide to meet up at a disco where there is a dance competition but both try to maintain the fiction that they are engaged. Out of desperation, Rikki hires Laila, a prostitute, to pose as Anaida, and Alvira asks Satvinder -- a mummy's boy/optician -- to pretend to be Steve. The four meet at a club and take part in the dance competition, while throwing insults at each other. Rikki and Laila emerge as the winners but Alvira is jealous and storms out in tears. Satvinder goes to Rikki's flat and tells him that he has fallen in love with Laila. He also tells him that Alvira is not engaged to him. Rikki, realizing what has happened, goes to see Alvira, who is at first moping in bed and later tries to convince her cousin not to marry her. Rikki calls her from a neighbor's window. The film ends with the mysterious gypsy musician showing how Rikki and Alvira invented the stories about the non-existent lovers by taking inspiration from Alvira's newspaper and Rikki's comic book.

Bagi penggemar Bollywood, film drama romansa hasil besutan Shaad Ali pada tahun 2007 ini sebaiknya jangan dilewatkan begitu saja karena sederet superstar Bollywood akan hadir. Sebut saja Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol dan Lara Dutta. Bahkan ayah Abhishek, legenda film India Amitabh Bachchan pun menjadi bintang tamu dalam film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom itu.

Kisah filmnya dimulai dengan dua orang yang saling tidak mengenal duduk bersama di peron sebuah stasiun kereta api di London, sedang menunggu tunangan mereka masing-masing. Mereka adalah Rikki Thukral (Abhishek Bachchan) dan Alvira Khan (Preity Zinta). Thukral adalah pemuda periang asal Bathinda, Punjab yang tinggal di Southall, London, sedangkan Alvira si gadis kelas elit Pakistan dari Lahore yang telah berasimilasi dengan budaya Inggris.

Rikki dan Alvira sembari menunggu akhirnya berkenalan. Mereka tidak butuh waktu lama untuk akrab, bahkan saling bertukar nomor telepon. Rikki mengaku punya tunangan yang bernama Anaida Raza, si manajer Hotel Ritz di Paris, sedangkan Alvira telah bertunangan dengan Steve Singh, blasteran Pakistan dan Inggris yang berprofesi pengacara top London. Tetapi mereka sebenarnya saling berbohong karena kisah tunangan mereka masing-masing itu fiktif belaka.

Ketika berpisah untuk pergi ke tujuan masing-masing, Rikki dan Alvira baru sadar mereka telah saling jatuh cinta, namun merasa tidak akan bisa bersatu, apalagi latar belakang mereka sangat bertolak belakang, bahkan dari negara berbeda. Ternyata mereka tidak bisa melupakan satu sama lain. Alvira bahkan kemudian menelepon Rikki, berpura-pura salah menekan nomor telepon.

Mereka pun berjanji bertemu di disko, tetapi mereka tetap berpura-pura punya tunangan. Untuk mengelabui Alvira, Rikki terpaksa menyewa Laila (Lara Dutta) yang sebenarnya pelacur untuk menyaru Anaida Raza, begitu pula Alvira yang juga ingin mengelabui Rikki dengan meminta sepupunya, Satvinder (Bobby Deol) untuk berpura-pura menjadi Steve Singh.
